My Top 3 Ways To Start Conversation

June 05, 20245 min read

Do you ever feel like you're talking into a void when it comes to your product or business? Like you're just hearing crickets in your inbox?

Trust me, I've been there too, and it can be frustrating. But don’t worry, I’m here to share my top THREE WAYS to effortlessly get into someone’s inbox and start genuine conversations without feeling awkward or weird. Let’s dive in!

Let’s dive in!

1. Leverage Facebook Birthday Messages

Facebook birthdays are a goldmine for starting conversations. Instead of just posting a generic "Happy Birthday!" on someone’s wall, take a moment to send them a personal message in Messenger. Here's how you can do it:

Personal Birthday Wishes

  • Send a Personal Message: "Hey [Name], I just wanted to pop in and wish you a happy birthday! I hope your day is tons of fun!"

  • Add a Fun Element: You can include a funny GIF, a cute meme, or a short video to make it more memorable.

Don’t overthink it.

If you ran into Jane at Starbucks four days after her birthday, you wouldn’t stress about wishing her a happy birthday. You’d just do it. Be the same way on social media—just be normal and kind. It's the thought that counts.

Birthday Timing

  • On the Day: Wishing someone on their actual birthday can make them feel extra special.

  • Before or After: If you’re busy or prefer to spread out your birthday wishes, sending them a day before or after is perfectly fine. Facebook’s birthday notifications make this super easy.

By consistently wishing people a happy birthday every day, you’ll end up talking to every person on your friends list at least once a year. Imagine the connections you’ll build! Plus, it’s great for your engagement metrics, but that’s a topic for another day.

Friend anniversary Messages

These seem to come and go on Facebook but when they come definitely engage with the people who's friendiversary it is. These are super fun!!!

  • Celebrate Your Connection: Pop in messenger with them and say, "Happy Friendaversary Jane! How's it going, LOL?"

  • ProTip: If you wish people a Happy Birthday and a Happy Friendaversay you will have talked to that person 2 times in a year without even thinking about it! The Facebook algorithm loves this!

2. Engage with The Newsfeed

People naturally pay more attention to their own posts than to others'. Use this to your advantage:

Genuine Engagement

  • Make Genuine Comments: Visit their profile and leave a sincere comment on something they’ve shared. Avoid generic remarks; instead, make your comment thoughtful and specific.

For instance, "Your vacation photos look amazing! That beach looks so serene. How was the trip?"

  • Show Real Interest: Be genuinely interested in their life updates. If they post about a new job, congratulate them and ask about their new role.

Transition to Messenger:

  • Start a Conversation: After commenting, send them a message like, "Hey [Name], your trip to Disney looked amazing! We’re planning a trip soon—any recommendations?"

  • Build Rapport: This approach starts a natural conversation and shows you’re genuinely interested in their experiences. It’s all about being authentic and engaging.

By being genuinely interested in what they share, you’re not just another person in their notifications—you become someone who values and appreciates their experiences.

3. Utilize Stories

Stories are a fantastic way to get into someone’s inbox naturally, and actually my favorite way. Since stories are more informal and temporary, they can be a less intimidating way to start conversations.

Comment on Their Stories

  • Genuine Interaction: When you see something interesting in their story, respond with a genuine comment. For example, "Hey [Name], that recipe looks delicious! Would you mind sharing it? I have picky eaters too!"

  • Show Enthusiasm: Express excitement or curiosity about what they’ve shared. "Wow, that hiking trail looks incredible! Where is it?"

Acknowledge Your Viewers

  • Thank Your Viewers: For those who watch your stories, send them a quick thank you message. "Thanks for checking out my stories, [Name]! How have you been?"

  • Start a Chat: This creates an opportunity for conversation without feeling forced. "Hey [Name], I saw you watched my story about [topic]. What do you think about it?"

By engaging with people who view your stories, you show that you notice and appreciate their attention. It’s a small gesture that can lead to meaningful interactions.

Share Your Stories

  • Share Personal and Business Updates: Regularly post stories about both your personal life and business. This helps people see different sides of you and feel more connected.

  • Encourage Interaction: Ask questions or create polls in your stories to encourage viewers to engage. "Which product should I feature next? A or B?"

By engaging with people who view your stories, you show that you notice and appreciate their attention. It’s a small gesture that can lead to meaningful interactions.

Why This Works?

People on social media crave real connections but often don’t know how to start. By reaching out in these small, thoughtful ways, you stand out as someone who genuinely cares. This not only helps build relationships but also makes you memorable as a business owner.

Stand Out from the Crowd

  • Consistency: By regularly engaging with your network in these ways, you stay top-of-mind and show that you’re active and interested.

  • Build Trust: These interactions build trust and rapport, making people more likely to turn to you when they need your products or services.

Building Genuine Connections

  • Be Authentic: Authenticity is key. People can sense when you’re being genuine versus when you’re just trying to sell something.

  • Show Appreciation: Simple acts of kindness, like wishing someone a happy birthday or commenting on their stories, go a long way in building strong connections. Most people watch but never comment! This makes you stand out!

So, give these tips a try and see how they work for you.

Building genuine connections is easier than you think, and people appreciate the effort. Happy connecting!

Homework: Now go out there and Start a conversation and watch how your social media presence thrives!
