5 DM Mistakes That Are Killing Your Sales (and What to Say Instead)

5 DM Mistakes That Are Killing Your Sales (and What to Say Instead)

Let me guess…

You’re posting consistently (or trying to 😅).

You’re showing up in stories.

You’re even getting a few likes and the occasional “love this!” comment…

So why aren’t the sales rolling in?

✨ The answer might be hiding in your DMs.

Because even if you have amazing offers, great content, and the best heart—you still need to be able to talk to people in a way that builds trust, not tension.

The good news? You don’t need to be salesy, fake, or weird to close sales.

You just need to stop making these 5 common DM mistakes—and try this instead 👇

❌ Mistake #1: Copy-paste “Hey Girl” scripts

You know the one:

“Hey girl! I thought of you because you seem like someone who would love…”

The moment your message feels scripted, your connection dies.

People don’t want to feel like a sales target. They want to feel seen.

✅ What to do instead:

Send a voice message. Be yourself. Reference something specific from their story or post.

“Hey! I saw your post about trying to cut back on caffeine—same. Just curious, why do you feel like you need to cut it out?”

Real > robotic. Every time.

❌ Mistake #2: Jumping into a pitch too soon

You follow someone. They follow back.

You wait 10 seconds…

And boom—product pitch.

Friend, slow your scroll. If they don’t trust you yet, they’re not buying from you.

✅ What to do instead:

Start conversations. Ask questions. Build a relationship first.

Not fake connection—genuine interaction.

💬 Try:

“Hey! I love that quote you shared—so good. Do you have any other book recs?”

Give value before you ask for attention.

❌ Mistake #3: Making it all about you

If your message starts with “I’m looking for 5 motivated women…” 👀

Yikes.

That energy turns people off because it feels like a pitch in disguise.

✅ What to do instead:

Flip the script. Make it about them. What are they struggling with? What would help them?

Lead with curiosity, not a quota.

💬 Try:

“I know a lot of moms are struggling to stay focused during the day—what’s your go-to energy hack right now?”

If you want to sell more, listen more.

❌ Mistake #4: Ghosting your warm leads

She said she was interested. You followed up once… and nothing.

Now you feel weird following up again, right?

I get it. But here’s the truth: people are busy. Life gets in the way.

They’re not ignoring you—they just forgot.

✅ What to do instead:

Follow up with warmth and zero pressure. I like to use a “no hard feelings” follow-up.

💬 Try:

“Hey! Totally no pressure, but I didn’t want you to miss this if you were still interested. Want me to resend the link?”

You’re not bothering anyone—you’re being helpful. 👏

❌ Mistake #5: Waiting until everything feels perfect

This one’s sneaky.

You spend so much time overthinking your messages, over-editing your content, and over-planning your posts that… you end up saying nothing at all.

👉 And silence never converts.

✅ What to do instead:

Be imperfect and consistent.

You don’t need to have the perfect script—you just need to show up, start conversations, and care.

If consistency is something you struggle with (welcome to the club), having a system that helps you stay on track is a total game-changer.

💡 What to Say Instead: My Go-To DM Conversation Framework

If you’ve ever opened someone’s story, stared at your screen, and thought:
“Okay Jen, but what do I actually
say?”
—This is for you.

Here’s the exact 5-step flow I use to keep DMs real, human, and not weird:

1. Connect

Start by reacting to something they shared—anything personal, funny, or relatable. It shows you're actually paying attention.

💬 “Omg I’m crying at your toddler’s dance moves. Mine used to do the exact same thing!”

2. Relate

Share something from your own life or experience. This builds trust and drops the wall.

💬 “I’ve totally been there with the never-ending laundry. It’s like it multiplies overnight, right? 😂”

3. Ask

Invite them into a conversation with a no-pressure question.

💬 “What’s your go-to energy boost during the day? I’m always looking for new mom hacks.”

4. Serve

If it feels right and the convo flows naturally, offer a resource or invite. (No pitching. Just helping.)

💬 “I’ve actually been using something that helps me stay super focused without needing 3 cups of coffee—want me to send you the info?”

5. Follow Up

Life gets busy. People forget. You’re not bugging them—just gently reminding.

💬 “Hey! Just circling back in case my last message got buried—were you still interested in xyz or have you found something that’s helping with that?”

✨ When in doubt: Be helpful. Be human.

And stop waiting for the perfect moment—because real connection beats perfect wording every time

✨ Let’s Keep It Real

You don’t need to become someone you’re not to make sales.
You don’t have to bug your friends and family.
And you definitely don’t need to send awkward “Hey girl” messages that make
you cringe.

I built my business in the middle of real life—laundry piles, dinner prep, and full-blown kid chaos—and I help other moms do the same.

No pressure. No weird scripts.
Just showing up consistently, connecting with real people, and keeping things simple.

Because the truth is:
✨ A small audience can be powerful
✨ Your personality is your superpower
✨ And with a clear plan, you really
can make sales daily—even if your business fits into the tiny cracks of your day
